TA Day 125
TA Day 125: Tuesday 22 April 2025
Hukatere - Bluff Campsite
This morning we had breakfast together with some of the nice people we had met at the campground the day before.
Then it was time to leave the nice place and set off again. During the morning we tried to dry the tent as much as we could because it was sunny. We also saw some of the wild horses that roam 90 Mile Beach.
Other than that not much happened today as we were beach walking all day. The most interesting thing that happened today, was that when we sat down to have a break, and Lukas pulled off Kim’s pants to let them air, he suddenly grabbed something and threw away. Kim was confused, and when asking what it was, Lukas told her he had just thrown away A COCKROACH! Wtf!? A cochroach had apparently been sitting on the inside of Kim’s leg all day, and we had walked 10 km! Disgusting.
We managed to arrive to Bluff Campsite just before dark. Found a corner of the grass that was relatively flat and not so sandy. We also found another wild horse eating some grass just a few meters from our pitched tent.
After dark, some fisherman arrived and gave Lukas some snapper to eat which he was very thankful for as he was still hungry.
In the tent we also discussed our plan of when to arrive to Cape Reinga. Our original plan, a long time ago, had been to walk long the last day, but then we had decided that it was easier to walk a normal day, and then a short day the last day so we could arrive in the morning. Due to the weather on Thursday morning though, Lukas wanted to change this back to the original plan. Kim wasn’t too excited at first, as it meant we would have to get up and get going in the middle of the night to arrive at Cape Reinga before dark tomorrow. But at the same time, it felt nice to have this as our last night in our tent instead of tomorrow, so she finally gave in.
We went to bed, a lot later than was good for us, considering the INSANELY early morning tomorrow. This was our last night. And tomorrow we would reach Cape Reinga.
Today's:
Distance: 30.71 km
Ascent: 122 m
Descent: 126 m
Tent nights: 60/125
